Dar Ghax-Xemx: Historic, Stunning, and Central

20.06.2017

A Review of Dar Ghax-Xemx

I fell in love with Dar Ghax-Xemx before I even stepped inside. It sits on a small, winding street lined with old, limestone buildings. The street is narrow, but it's made even narrower by the overflowing with plants that pour out of the pots lining the historic brick alley. The setting is picturesque to say the least. But one thing I’ve learned from my travels is to never judge a book by its cover. So I held my judgments for after I’d spent a night in this vacation rental. Here’s what I discovered.

Dar Ghax-Xemx is a building with a history

The building itself is over 300 years old. Eight years ago, Anton and Bunty (a married couple living in Gozo) decided to renovate the place. They kept the original structure and chipped away years of paint and plaster to reveal the traditional limestone walls. While they kept as much of the old feel as possible, they added new touches that really brought the place to life.

Anton built a stone kitchen, rooftop terrace, and barbecue. Bunty renovated the furniture and created two stunning handmade mosaic mirrors. With their care and incredible eye for detail, Bunty and Anton transformed Dar Ghax-Xemx from a rundown, forgotten building into a stunning vacation rental in the heart of Gozo.

And it’s not just the vacation rental that has history. Dar Ghax-Xemx is located on the oldest street in Gozo and is surrounded by some of the most historic and interesting buildings on the island.

This vacation rental will take your breath away

Dar Ghax-Xemx is now owned by Antonia and her son, George, and they’ve done a great job maintaining the building’s charm and heart. Like I said, the minute I arrived I was gawking at the plants lining the street, but the inside was just as beautiful.

Every inch of this home is meticulously decorated and it comes together to form a truly spectacular vacation rental. I loved the décor, I loved the architecture, and I loved the plants. But most of all, I loved the view.

The stairs lead straight up to the rooftop terrace, where a shaded chair offers a view of the entire city. The best part? It’s facing in the direction of the sunset. Whether I was eating breakfast, working on my computer, or enjoying a sunset glass of wine, I kept finding excuses to go up there and ogle the view.

Located in the heart of Victoria, you can easily get anywhere from here

Dar Ghax-Xemx was the most central of all the places I stayed while in Gozo. I’m usually not a fan of being right in the heart of the city—it’s often loud and crowded—but this wasn’t the case with Dar Ghax-Xemx. In fact, if you ask me, you couldn’t find a better location.

This vacation rental is only a two-minute walk from the center of town and you can easily access the bus station, the best restaurants, and the Victoria Citadel on foot. While boasting this central location, Dar Ghax-Xemx is also tucked away in the center of a maze of winding alleyways, which means it’s quiet and secluded while still being in the middle of everything.

Like I said, it really is the perfect location.

What amenities does Dar Ghax-Xemx have?

The Final Verdict: an absolute dream for anyone visiting Gozo

I’m kind of obsessed. It helps that George and Antonia were incredibly sweet and made my stay delightful. If I am ever back in Gozo I will not hesitate to book Dar Ghax-Xemx a second time. I had an incredible stay here and absolutely adored the place. It’s a stunning vacation rental with a lot of history in an ideal location… what more could you ask for?!
